This work entails teaching the basic driving skills to beginner drivers, usually in a series (30–40) of one-hour-long lessons. Most people work for a driving school, often on a so-called franchise basis, where the car and a supply of pupils is provided by the school in return for a fee, and the instructor is effectively self-employed. Often, the teaching car will have dual-controls fitted as a precautionary measure: the safety of the car and its passengers and that of other road users are the instructor’s responsibility. Pre-planning of the routes to be driven, so that all the different kinds of hazards and situations that are likely to occur in everyday driving are experienced, and also explaining driving etiquette and road-use and the elements of the Highway Code are all parts of the job. Instructors with further experience of special categories can teach Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) or Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) courses.
