Occupational therapists assist people of all ages who have become handicapped due to accident, illness or the effects of old age. They ascertain the level of disability, and devise a regimen of special exercises that they then implement. They help the patient also with much encouragement, and try to regain for the patients as much independence as possible. This may also entail helping the patient to come to terms with some permanent loss of mobility and a subsequent retraining of the patient to use for example one hand instead of two in some situations, or how to adapt to life in a wheelchair.
