Refuse collectors empty dustbins and other containers, depositing the contents into a vehicle having a special device to compress the rubbish, thus allowing large amounts of material to be collected in one load. The work is heavy, involving much lifting and carrying, and must be done in all weathers, and can vary between being hot and dusty and smelly in summer to being cold and sometimes hazardous in winter if the conditions are snowy or icy. The work is usually carried out in a team consisting of one driver and two to four other workers. Some refuse workers drive the lorries that deliver and collect skips from industrial or other special sites.
