Leather technicians are involved in the entire process of producing leather articles. They first design cutting patterns, they then cut the leather and sew it by hand or by machine, lining and decorating the product when necessary. Generally they specialise in a certain area: fine leather wear such as brief cases, suitcases etc. or for agriculture or army equipment. Some may specialise in leather furnishing, for instance for automobiles, and other specialities include sporting articles such as boxing gloves or balls or the manufacture of protective clothing. Many leather technicians have their own shop where they are self-employed and sell their products directly to the public.
