Music teachers work in primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities. They also work as private teachers. In primary schools, music is usually taught by the class teacher under the guidance of one teacher responsible for music in the whole school: in secondary schools there is normally a specialist music teacher who teachers the subject and also arranges other activities such as choirs, orchestras, concerts and may arrange visits from instrumentalists or other specialist music teachers. In colleges and universities there will usually be a Department of Music in which a number of teachers or lecturers work under a professor or director of studies. At school, the teacher will endeavour to cultivate an appreciation of music in the pupils, and introduce them to a wide range of musical styles in order to broaden their musical horizons.
