They assist the research scientists in their work, preparing the experiments, and if necessary adapting parts of the apparatus. They record the details of every experiment and the results. They clean and maintain the entire lab. equipment too. Their work can be in a university or in an industrial company, and their work can be for research or product development, amongst other things. They have to be fully conversant with the all the mechanical, electrical and electronic apparatus and measuring devices and how to use them. All the results must be carefully documented and the relevant statistical conclusions drawn from them (usually using a computer).
