The postman/woman collects, transports and delivers the mail. They deal with letters, parcels and money sent by mail. Before they start their round, they must sort their deliveries into a logical sequence, and then distribute them on foot or bicycle, or in the case of a longer rural round, by van. They are often the public’s almost sole contact with the Post Office, and sometimes with the outside world in general. Other work in the Post Office includes sorting of special mailings (most is automated) and handling such items that cannot be automatically dealt with, such as badly-addressed letters or badly-wrapped parcels.
