The profession of originator in the early production stages of printing was founded during the development of electronic media working methods. Up to then it were the typographer and the lithographer who worked on the text and pictures. Today, those areas cannot any longer be separated. Originators work on a computer with both the text and illustrations, typing the text from the source (or sometimes inputting it from a computer disk), or scanning it in and likewise inputting the graphic material.
They then make proofs for the client. If he approves they make the 'camera-ready copy' that is the final perfect copy used in the making of the litho printing plates.
