Large goods vehicle drivers are involved in the collection and delivery of goods. There are two different LGV licences required: one for rigid trucks over 7.5 tonnes, the other for articulated lorries or lorries with a trailer. Normally the driver is responsible for loading and unloading the lorry, and also for cleaning and refuelling it. Planning the shortest and most economical route is part of their work, and if they are self-employed they will have to arrange for a load to transport on the return journey. They have sole responsibility for the safety of their load. They must also be fully aware of all the regulations relating to their work in the UK and, if they go abroad, those applying in the different countries they visit or pass through. A tachograph in the lorry records all the details of every trip undertaken.
