Pharmacy assistants work under the supervision of pharmacists in retail outlets. They help with the control and ordering of stock, serve and assist the customers when they buy over-the-counter medicines or any of the other items stocked by the chemist. They also assist in the preparation of the prescription medicines, checking that the right medicines have been prepared and the correct quantity given, mix and prepare ointments, dilute medicines to the prescribed strength, and enter the daily transactions into the computer. Assistants can also work in hospital and industrial pharmacies, where the work can often be in specialised fields.
