The dentist’s job is to repair or replace diseased teeth, and, together with the hygienist, conduct prophylactic treatment. They do all they can to allow us to keep our natural teeth as long as possible. Teeth can be repaired by fillings, crowns and bridges, or if necessary, replaced by implants. For extensive work, resulting from e.g. accident, disease or congenital deformity, the dentist would refer the patient to a Dental Hospital. To be a good dentist requires a dedication to painstaking work, a long period of education and training (the same as a doctor), and a patient and sympathetic personality in order to gain the confidence of and assist their patients, who are often in pain or afraid, or both.
