Street cleaners work in urban and rural areas of the country and keep the streets and other public places free from litter. They are important public servants who help in the fight against rats and other pests and make the environment safer and more pleasant. They employ equipment such as motorised or manually powered vacuum-assisted sweeper vehicles or carts and also brooms and shovels to collect the rubbish to deposit in their dustcart as they follow their usually set routes. They also remove fly-posters, empty litter bins, clear drains gutters, remove dog excrement and also employ special equipment to clean cobblestones and weeds. They work outdoors in all weathers and must be physically active the whole working hours, so they must be healthy and physically fit and not easily put off by having to deal with objects that are often dirty and smelly.
