This work covers the areas of public health, safety at work and in the home and disease notification and control. Much of that time is spent inspecting factories and other buildings to identify problems or defects, and also to collect evidence and to check hygiene standards, pollution emissions and all aspects of maintaining a safe environment. They must make careful notes of all their activities, as they are often required to testify in legal proceedings.
