Publicans/licensees are responsible for overseeing the running of licensed premises. They may employ several staff as bar personnel, caterers, cleaning staff etc. The success of their premises depends upon their ability to provide a welcoming atmosphere - one that the customers will want to return to. Publicans have overall responsibility for the well-being of their workers and clients: they must maintain hygienic and physically safe conditions. They are responsible for controlling the stock and the security of the premises, as in a large pub the daily income can be quite considerable. They are also responsible for arranging and booking any entertainment they might have. The work can be quite heavy at times, for example when moving crates and barrels or large cartons of catering supplies. Diplomacy and tact is called for, as well as a certain amount of self-assertion when problems arise with staff or clientele.
