Much of this work is now automated, but some work is still done by skilled craftsmen. The traditional method of ‘throwing’ pots on a wheel is now only done in small craft potteries, as is some hand casting of ceramics. Most flat and hollow items such as plates and cups is now done on machines, as is the finishing process – though here, too, some of this work is still done by hand.
The work can be quite heavy, especially when dealing with larger items such as sanitary or electrical ware, and also factories can be noisy and hot to work in. Craft ceramic workers work in smaller workshops, and generally the work is not so strenuous.
Salaries range between £10,000 and £20,000 for a skilled ceramic/pottery maker.
