Dental hygienists mostly work in dentist’s practices. They remove soft and hard plaque from the teeth, which would lead to gum disease if left unremoved, clean and polish teeth and fillings and take X-rays. In addition, they show and explain to the patients how to care for their teeth. They fill out all the details on the patient's card, and if something needs to be done by the dentist they give the patient another appointment. As well as in dentist’s practices they can also work in schools, university clinics, hospitals and homes.
