Welding is a process to join two pieces of metal together by heating them with a very hot flame or an electric arc. There are five main welding methods: three using different gas mixtures and two different electric arc systems. Few welders are proficient in all five systems, as the different systems are used for different metals and thicknesses. Welders work to precise instructions given on engineering drawings and use their experience to plan how best to accomplish the job. Sometimes the welding is done in a workshop and then transported to the site. On-site welding necessitates working at all angles, from above and below. Whilst all welding is subject to rigorous testing, especially critical work will be even more strictly tested to ensure complete safety.
