Nurses are responsible for the tending of patients in situations the development of which is basically predictable. They take time to get to know the patients, their personalities, their wishes and abilities. This is to assist them to give the best help in the healing process. They get to know their families and relatives too and may even have to actively and explicitly include them in the care of the patient.
Nurses support their charges in their basic grooming – washing, tooth brushing, combing, putting on clothes –, they change bandages, treat wounds, put on drips etc. They observe and note down the course of the illness and assist in therapy measures. In emergencies, they initiate the necessary measures. They work in cooperation with other health care persons.
