Glass is a versatile and an extremely useful material: its history goes back many thousands of years. The different sorts of glass are heated to a high temperature to make it molten, and it is then formed by blowing, rolling, pressing, pouring, etc., nowadays mostly in an automated process, but some glassware for special requirements is still hand-made. The still-existing hand workers include glass blowers, finishers, glass benders, lathe workers and decorators. Some crafts people having their own studio undertake the whole spectrum of glasswork, for instance in the production of decorative glassware. The furnaces used to heat the glass make the work area quite hot and noisy.
