Field social workers work amongst the community, usually as part of a a team specialising in one or more of the various categories of social work. This may be with children having special needs, for instance when the child’s family situation is less than satisfactory: or when the child has a disability that the family finds difficult to cope with. They also work with adults, for example with emotionally disturbed people, older people experiencing difficulties or people with medical problems: there are many situations in which they are called upon to assist people.
