Shoe repairers nowadays supplement their business with other activities such as key cutting, replacing watchstraps, selling rubber stamps, etc. Their main work, however, is still the repair of all types of boots and shoes. Fitting heels to ladies’ shoes is normally a while-you-wait service, but other, bigger, jobs are carried out for later collection. Work is carried out using hand tools assisted by electrical machinery for filing, polishing and stitching, while stapling and nailing will normally be done using a compressed air machine: key cutting is done using an electric grinder. Most shoe repairers work in heel bars, often situated in other shops such as supermarkets. They also carry out repairs to other leather goods such as handbags.
