Waste management/recycling officers work in the collection and disposal of industrial and household waste. Their work deals with organising and managing waste treatment and disposal, recycling, street cleaning and litter. This can include: managing existing and developing new waste management and recycling schemes; safe and non-polluting transportation of waste; compiling statistics and managing budgets and targets; organising good teamwork and ensuring good public relations. The normal working week is 35 hours, but sometimes weekend work or overtime may be necessary. Most of this type of work is conducted by local authorities, but there are also private waste businesses, environmental agencies, non-profit making conservation projects and other organisations that also carry out such work.
